When the historic Old Central Fire Station in Perth opened its doors to a new generation of visitors, they needed a story that resonated, one that was engaging, clear and rooted in place. Studio Scotts stepped in to develop a creative execution for Stepping Back with Fireman Jack, a free self-guided walking tour that brings the city’s firefighting history to life. From trail signage to audio cues and digital integration, the project blends heritage and experience into one seamless journey.

Heritage experiences for a new audience
Studio Scotts were asked to create a brand-aligned guide for a walking tour using story, visuals and digital tools to reveal hidden chapters of Perth’s firefighting past. We were given licence for full creative, concept and development including, illustrative signage and printed materials. By crafting an experience that would deepen understanding of the station and its brave residents the trials and tribulations could not only shared again but paths walked and views seen again.

Influential and awarded
Delivered to the client was a rich visual language and rollout across print, signage and digital assets. The trail map, wayfinding signage and supporting print pieces carried the tone of discovery and respect for heritage. Audio narration and app integration gave the self-guided experience depth and flexibility. The result: Stepping Back with Fireman Jack was awarded the Interpretation Category at the 2025 Western Australian Heritage Awards, recognising its success in enriching public understanding and appreciation of place.
