Artist and author Philippa O’Brien presents a vivid collection of early European depictions of Western Australia’s landscapes and flora. Rare paintings, prints and watercolours from the Baudin, Freycinet and Flinders expeditions have recorded the story of the Swan River colony. The result is a publication that reads like a work of art itself: visually rigorous, thoughtfully crafted, and deeply resonant.

The Brief

Tell the untold story

Working closely with the author Philippa O’Bien we develop a brief was clear: design an experience that matches the depth of the subject matter, one that supports delicate and sensitive imagery. A flexible system was developed to ensure both written and pictorial elements contributed equally to the page-by-page story telling. Seeking to embed moments of discovery, this print piece includes two immersive gatefold spreads that re-present the art in great detail.

The Outcome

A crafted visual experience

We delivered a design solution that merges form and function. The typography was chosen for legibility across dense text and image spreads. The cover and internal layouts were accentuated with a palette and finishes that evoke both historic gravitas and contemporary clarity. We handled print management end‑to‑end materials, colour fidelity, binding, and finishing to ensure the book felt as good in hand as it looks on the page. The finished book stands as a fitting home for the narrative: an object of visual and intellectual substance.
